About Basic HDMI Switchers
VigilLink's basic HDMI switcher range provides clean, reliable input selection for installations where video routing is the primary requirement and audio handling is managed separately by the display, AV receiver, or downstream audio system. Six models cover 2x1 through 5x1 configurations across two bandwidth tiers: HDMI 2.1 at 48Gbps for 8K@60Hz and 4K@120Hz environments (VLSW-21H21, VLSW-41H21, VLSW-41H21E, VLSW-41CH21E), and HDMI 2.0 at 18Gbps for standard 4K@60Hz applications (VLSW-31H20, VLSW-51H20).
EDID management is available on the VLSW-41H21E and VLSW-41CH21E to eliminate source-display negotiation issues during switching; the VLSW-41CH21E further adds a native USB-C input port for direct laptop and mobile device connection. Every model ships with VigilLink's 6-year warranty.
Choosing the Right Basic HDMI Switcher
8K 48Gbps HDMI 2.1 — Standard (VLSW-21H21 / VLSW-41H21): Full 48Gbps bandwidth for 8K@60Hz, 4K@120Hz, VRR, and ALLM. The VLSW-21H21 is a compact 2x1 for two-source setups; the VLSW-41H21 is a 4x1 for four-source environments. Neither includes EDID management — choose these when source-display compatibility is consistent and the simplest possible switching solution is preferred.
8K 48Gbps HDMI 2.1 — With EDID (VLSW-41H21E / VLSW-41CH21E): Both are 4x1 HDMI 2.1 48Gbps models with active EDID management that stores and presents a fixed EDID to all connected sources, preventing resolution renegotiation glitches when switching. The VLSW-41H21E has four HDMI 2.1 inputs; the VLSW-41CH21E replaces one HDMI input with a USB-C input (DisplayPort Alt Mode) for direct laptop and mobile device connection without an adapter. Choose the VLSW-41H21E for consistent multi-source HDMI 2.1 environments; choose the VLSW-41CH21E when one source is regularly a modern laptop or USB-C device.
4K 18Gbps HDMI 2.0 — Standard (VLSW-31H20 / VLSW-51H20): HDMI 2.0 at 18Gbps for standard 4K@60Hz source selection where 8K and high-frame-rate content are not present. The VLSW-31H20 is a 3x1 for three-source setups; the VLSW-51H20 is a 5x1 for five-source environments. Choose this family when the cost efficiency of HDMI 2.0 switching is appropriate and no source requires HDMI 2.1 bandwidth.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between VLSW-41H21, VLSW-41H21E, and VLSW-41CH21E?
All three are 4x1 HDMI 2.1 48Gbps switchers with identical video performance. The VLSW-41H21 is the base model with four HDMI inputs and no EDID management. The VLSW-41H21E adds active EDID management, storing a fixed EDID for all connected sources to prevent resolution glitches during switching. The VLSW-41CH21E includes EDID management and replaces one HDMI input with a USB-C input (DisplayPort Alt Mode) for direct laptop and mobile device connection.
What HDMI bandwidth does the VLSW-21H21 and VLSW-41H21 support?
Both models operate at the full 48Gbps HDMI 2.1 bandwidth, supporting 8K@60Hz, 4K@120Hz 4:4:4, VRR, ALLM, Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HDCP 2.3. They are also fully backward compatible with HDMI 2.0, HDMI 1.4, and earlier sources and displays.
When should I choose the VLSW-31H20 or VLSW-51H20 instead of an HDMI 2.1 model?
The VLSW-31H20 (3x1) and VLSW-51H20 (5x1) are HDMI 2.0 18Gbps models suited for installations where all sources output a maximum of 4K@60Hz and 8K, 4K@120Hz, or VRR content is not present. They are cost-effective choices for standard corporate AV, hospitality, and presentation environments. If any source now or in the future will output HDMI 2.1 content, an HDMI 2.1 model is the better investment.
Does the USB-C input on the VLSW-41CH21E work with all laptops?
The VLSW-41CH21E's USB-C input supports DisplayPort Alt Mode over USB-C, which is the video output standard used by most Windows laptops (Thunderbolt 3/4, USB4) and MacBooks from 2016 onward. Devices that output video only via USB-C Thunderbolt or DisplayPort Alt Mode are supported. Laptops that do not support video output over USB-C require a USB-C to HDMI adapter and should connect to one of the three HDMI 2.1 inputs instead.
Do these basic switchers include audio de-embedding?
No. The basic HDMI switcher range does not include audio de-embedding — HDMI audio passes through to the display or downstream device on the HDMI output only. For integrated audio de-embedding alongside source switching, select the VLSW-21H21A or VLSW-41H21A from the HDMI Switchers with Audio De-Embedding subcategory.
What switching method and control options are available?
All models in the basic HDMI switcher range support front-panel button switching and IR remote control. Input selection can also be triggered via the front-panel button cycle. For Crestron, Extron, AMX, or VigilLynx control system integration, consult individual product documentation for RS-232 control availability.
Can I mix HDMI 2.0 and HDMI 2.1 sources on the same switcher?
Yes. VigilLink HDMI 2.1 switchers (VLSW-21H21, VLSW-41H21, VLSW-41H21E, VLSW-41CH21E) accept HDMI 2.0 and HDMI 1.4 sources on any input. Each input negotiates independently with its connected source. The output signal bandwidth is determined by the active source — switching to an HDMI 2.0 source delivers an HDMI 2.0 signal to the display; switching to an HDMI 2.1 source delivers the full 48Gbps signal.
Is there a 2x1 model with EDID management in the basic range?
Currently the EDID-managed models in the basic HDMI switcher range are 4x1 configurations (VLSW-41H21E and VLSW-41CH21E). The 2x1 VLSW-21H21 does not include EDID management. For a 2x1 switcher with audio de-embedding (which also handles EDID handshaking), the VLSW-21H21A is an alternative.
