Ideal Applications

Commercial Building Audio Distribution

Perfect for office buildings, corporate campuses, and commercial facilities requiring background music and paging distribution to multiple zones. Connect four audio sources (background music feeds, paging microphones, announcement systems, emergency alerts) via Phoenix terminals and route them throughout your Dante® network to ceiling speakers, conference rooms, and public areas. The compact form factor and Phoenix connectors make it ideal for installation in network closets, above ceiling tiles, or in equipment racks where space is limited. Dual PoE+ power simplifies installation by eliminating separate power supplies in remote locations.

Educational Institution Classroom Systems

Designed for schools, colleges, and training facilities requiring permanent audio installation in multiple classrooms and lecture spaces. Connect ceiling microphones, teacher wireless receivers, and multimedia system audio using secure Phoenix terminals that won't accidentally disconnect. The four outputs can feed zone amplifiers, powered speakers, or recording systems for lecture capture. Individual channel DSP allows optimization for different room acoustics, while the compact design fits in wall-mounted equipment enclosures or AV carts without consuming valuable rack space.

Hospitality & Restaurant Multi-Zone Systems

Ideal for hotels, restaurants, bars, and entertainment venues requiring reliable background music and announcement distribution. Connect four different audio feeds (dining room music, bar area audio, patio speakers, house music) with Phoenix terminals providing permanent, secure connections that won't work loose during service. Each zone receives independent DSP processing for room-specific EQ and volume control. The screw-terminal design is perfect for installation by electrical contractors who prefer Phoenix connectors over XLR, while dual PoE+ eliminates the need for local power in remote equipment locations.

Fixed Conference & Meeting Room Installations

Essential for corporate meeting rooms, huddle spaces, and conference facilities with permanently installed microphones and speakers. Phoenix terminals allow integration with architectural audio systems, ceiling microphones, and in-wall volume controls that contractors typically install during building construction. Connect up to four table microphones or ceiling mic zones to your Dante® network, routing them to DSPs, recording systems, and video conferencing equipment. The compact unit mounts easily in furniture, behind displays, or in equipment closets, with dual PoE+ power from your network infrastructure.

System Integration & OEM Applications

Perfect for system integrators and OEM manufacturers building custom audio solutions where Phoenix terminal blocks are preferred over XLR connectors. The screw-terminal connections integrate seamlessly with building automation systems, architectural speaker systems, and custom installation projects. Compact dimensions fit in tight spaces, AV furniture, and custom enclosures. Use for retrofitting existing audio systems with Dante® connectivity without replacing traditional terminal-block wiring infrastructure. The professional metal enclosure and dual PoE+ power make it suitable for permanent installation in diverse environments from retail stores to healthcare facilities.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Phoenix connectors and XLR connectors?

Phoenix connectors are screw-terminal blocks that use removable plugs with wire terminals secured by small screws. They're ideal for permanent installations where connections won't be frequently changed, common in commercial AV, building automation, and fixed installations. XLR connectors (like our VLDT-XL44DB model) use locking plugs and are preferred for portable systems, live sound, and applications requiring frequent cable changes. Phoenix connectors integrate better with architectural audio systems and are often preferred by electrical contractors.

Can I use the VLDT-LN44DB with unbalanced audio sources?

Yes, the VLDT-LN44DB supports both balanced and unbalanced audio connections on all inputs and outputs. For balanced connections, use the positive, negative, and ground terminals. For unbalanced sources, connect the signal to positive, leave negative open, and connect ground. The unit automatically accommodates both connection types, making it flexible for integration with diverse equipment including consumer audio gear, architectural speakers, and professional audio systems.

How do I wire the Phoenix terminal blocks correctly?

Each Phoenix connector has three terminals per channel: positive (+), negative (-), and ground (G). For balanced connections, wire hot to positive, cold to negative, and shield to ground. For unbalanced connections, wire signal to positive, leave negative unconnected, and connect shield/ground to ground terminal. The included Phoenix connectors are removable, allowing you to wire them at your workbench before plugging into the unit, simplifying installation in tight spaces or rack-mounted configurations.

What is the maximum wire gauge the Phoenix connectors accept?

The 3.5mm Phoenix terminal blocks accept wire gauges from 26 AWG to 16 AWG (0.14mm² to 1.5mm²), suitable for standard audio installation wire. The screw terminals provide secure connections that won't work loose over time, making them ideal for permanent installations. Use stranded wire for flexibility during installation, and ensure proper strain relief to prevent wire fatigue at the terminal connection points.

Can I use this in a mobile or touring application?

While the VLDT-LN44DB is designed primarily for fixed installations, it can be used in mobile applications where Phoenix terminal connections are acceptable. However, for touring, live sound, or frequently-moved systems where regular cable changes occur, consider the VLDT-XL44DB with XLR connectors instead, as XLR connections are faster to change and more resistant to connection failures from repeated plugging and unplugging. Phoenix connectors excel in permanent installations but aren't optimized for frequent reconnection.

Does this support both PoE ports simultaneously for redundant power?

Yes, the VLDT-LN44DB features PoE+ capability on both the primary and secondary Dante® network ports. You can power the unit from either port independently, or connect both for redundant power sources. If power fails on one port, the unit continues operating on the other, ensuring uninterrupted audio in critical installations. The unit consumes only 8.64W, well within PoE+ capacity (25.5W), allowing reliable operation even with one power source, while the second provides redundancy.

How does the compact size compare to XLR models?

The VLDT-LN44DB measures 200mm × 180mm × 44mm (approximately 7.9" × 7.1" × 1.7"), making it significantly more compact than XLR-based models. This smaller footprint is achieved by using space-efficient Phoenix connectors instead of XLR jacks. The compact design fits easily in wall-mounted equipment enclosures, above ceiling tiles, in furniture, or in space-constrained rack locations where full-width 1U devices won't fit, making it ideal for distributed audio installations throughout commercial buildings.

Can I mix mic and line level signals on the same unit?

Yes, each of the four inputs has independent sensitivity adjustment from -35dBV (mic level) to +24dBu (line level). This allows you to connect microphones to some inputs and line-level equipment to others within the same unit. For example, you could connect two podium microphones (inputs 1-2) and two line-level sources like a media player and paging system (inputs 3-4), adjusting each input's sensitivity appropriately through the web GUI or Dante® Controller.
